The MiDGT app will identify us as drivers

Driving-related apps are taking up more and more space on our phones. But what about identification? The launch of a revamped DGT Electronic Office comes with an interesting solution: MiDGT.

Identifying yourself with your mobile phone is going to be possible in the case of the driving licence. This will be possible thanks to miDGT, an app being developed by the IT Department of the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT). It seems a logical project in this day and age, since smartphones are becoming ever more functional, so it is not far-fetched to be able to bring together in a single app all the documentation we are required to carry when driving. The body has not yet announced the date on which it would launchThe MiDGT app will identify us as drivers the app, although it has revealed its creation in an article in its magazine, in the July issue.

In this case we are going beyond a 2019 car app, given that the driving licence is an official document that can be used to identify us even in order to exercise our right to vote, according to Organic Law 5/1985 of 19 June. Since 2013, driving licences issued in the EU have followed a uniform format (a laminated, secure credit-card-style model with a photo), but a physical one. So for the moment, it seems that this digital version of the driving licence would only be valid in our country.

MiDGT is a personal space in which, on entering the Electronic Office, we must identify ourselves. How? With an electronic ID card (DNI), digital certificate, PIN or permanent cl@ve. This is a space where we can access personal information about notifications, case files and alerts. The information it provides includes the following:

  • The licences we hold, as well as their expiry date.
  • The points we have at the time of the query.
  • Whether there is any outstanding fine, notified by public notice.

Let us remember that carrying your driving licence is compulsory when you are at the wheel. If we are asked for it and do not show it, we can be given a fine of up to 100 euros for a minor offence.
