The Hidden Risks on the Road

Prevention and Awareness for Drivers and Professionals

Driving is an everyday activity for most of us, but are we really aware of all the dangers lurking on the road? Beyond the obvious accidents caused by traffic offences, there are hidden risks that often go unnoticed until it is too late. At REAC, the Network of Roadside Assistance Companies, we are not only dedicated to resolving incidents; we also care deeply about road safety and prevention.

Fatigue at the Wheel: The Silent Enemy

One of the most underestimated risks is fatigue. We are not just talking about falling asleep at the wheel, but about the reduced attention, slower reflexes and difficulty making quick decisions that tiredness causes. Fatigue can be as dangerous as driving under the influence of alcohol.

For drivers: If you feel drowsy, stop in a safe place and rest. A coffee may help temporarily, but it is no substitute for sleep. Plan your journeys with frequent stops and avoid driving at the times when you are most tired.

For roadside assistance professionals: Our operators, who often work long shifts in stressful situations, are particularly exposed to fatigue. It is crucial that companies establish adequate rest protocols and that the professionals themselves are aware of their limits. Everyone's safety depends on them being at 100%.

Distraction from Mobile Devices: A Constant Threat

In the digital age, the mobile phone has become an extension of our hand, but using it at the wheel is one of the main causes of accidents. One second of distraction to read a message can mean travelling several metres out of control.

For all road users: Switch off your phone or put it on silent while you drive! If you need to use GPS, set it up before setting off and place the device in a suitable holder. No message is worth a life.

Adverse Weather Conditions: When Nature Gets Tough

Heavy rain, fog, snow, ice or strong winds can turn a familiar road into a high-risk scenario. Visibility is reduced, tyre grip decreases and reaction capacity is compromised.

For drivers: Slow down, increase your safety distance and switch on the appropriate lights. Know your vehicle's limitations and avoid sudden manoeuvres.

For roadside assistance professionals: Working in extreme weather conditions is a reality for our teams. It requires specific training and the use of appropriate protective equipment to ensure their safety and that of the users they assist. At REAC, we offer specialised training that covers handling complex situations in any weather conditions.

Awareness is the Key

At REAC, we firmly believe that prevention is the best tool. These hidden risks are not invincible; with awareness, training and the adoption of safe habits, we can minimise them. Our mission is not only to assist once a problem has occurred, but also to educate so that many of those problems never happen.

Remember: road safety is a shared responsibility. What measures do you take to protect yourself and others on the road?
