Spain fails in electromobility, despite the rise in electric vehicle registrations

More than 60% of the models reaching the Spanish market between 2019 and 2020 will have an electrified version. By 2025, a wider range of electric vehicles is expected to be available, with more than 300 models to choose from.

The Electromobility Barometer of the Spanish Association of Car and Lorry Manufacturers (ANFAC), published for the first time last May, aims to gauge the reality of electric mobility and eco cars in our country, as well as the development of charging infrastructure. The result is not very encouraging for now: Spain is only ahead of Italy in terms of the penetration of electric and pure electric vehicles. The barometer is an index with a base of 100 that assesses the fulfilment of the following targets:

  • Reaching a 10% market share for electric vehicles
  • Achieving 70% penetration of pure electric vehicles relative to electric vehicles
  • Making charging points widespread (3.3 points per 1,000 people of driving age)
  • 30% of those points must be fast or ultra-fast charging points

Our country would be at level 15 out of 100, which puts us a long way behind the Netherlands (with a compliance level of 76), or Norway, which doubles the barometer’s targets (with a compliance level of 200).

Poor marks, but good prospects

ANFAC has also pointed out that in May registrations of electric, hybrid and gas vehicles rose by 57% in Spain, including passenger cars, quadricycles, commercial and industrial vehicles and buses. Furthermore, in the first five months of the year registrations of this type of vehicle rose by 47% compared with the same period in 2018. But the most spectacular figure corresponds to electric vehicles, whose registrations increased by 180% in the month analysed.

The production of electric vehicles will triple in Europe in the coming years, according to a study by the European Federation of NGOs Transport & Environment, which also predicts an impact on the labour market (around 120,000 new jobs will be created). In 2025, our country will manufacture 307,469 electric vehicles and 203,316 plug-in hybrid vehicles.

The study also points to the maturity of a market which must, however, be able to count on the various governments as regards the legislative framework, tax incentives and charging infrastructure, which can encourage users to make this transition in mobility. In this respect, traffic restrictions and zero-emission car models are fundamental.
