Road Safety Tips: How to Stay Safe When Receiving Roadside Assistance

Receiving roadside assistance can be stressful, but following a few key tips can make all the difference in terms of safety. Here is a guide to keeping yourself protected while you wait for help.

Signal Your Position:

As soon as you detect a problem, switch on your hazard lights and place the warning triangles at a suitable distance or put out a V16 beacon. This will alert other drivers and help prevent accidents.

In 2026, the DGT will definitively replace warning triangles with the aim of reducing the likelihood of drivers being hit and geolocating vehicles in an emergency.

The connected V16 beacon for cars is an amber light device that is easy to use, as the driver does not have to step out onto the road to place it. Its function is to signal the spot where the broken-down or crashed car has stopped so that other drivers can see it from a long distance.

Find a Safe Place:

If possible, move your vehicle to a safe area, such as the hard shoulder or a nearby exit. Avoid stopping on bends or in blind spots where visibility is limited.

Keep Away from Traffic:

Once you have parked, get out of the vehicle on the side away from the traffic and go to a safe place. If you have passengers, make sure everyone stays off the carriageway.

Wear a Reflective Vest:

If you need to get out of the vehicle, put on a reflective vest to increase your visibility, especially in poor light or at night.

Stay Calm:

Patience is key. Stay calm and follow the instructions of the assistance professional. Avoid carrying out repairs yourself if you do not have the necessary experience, as you could put yourself in danger.

Keep Your Phone to Hand: Keep your phone charged and to hand. Tell the assistance company your exact location and, if possible, give visual landmarks to make it easier for the technician to reach you.

Safety when receiving roadside assistance is a priority. By following these tips, you can make sure that both you and other road users are protected while you wait for help. Always remember to be prepared and to make decisions that put your safety first.

At REAC you will find all kinds of information you need on road safety and roadside assistance.
