REAC attends an event to promote a healthy, sustainable and competitive SME ecosystem

Manuel Fernández presented the success story of Grúas Mallorca at an event organised by CAEB where the MIESES model, a tool that promotes the Sustainable Development Goals, was presented.

Manuel Fernández, chairman of the Red de Empresas de Auxilio en Carretera (REAC), attended an interesting event on Thursday 27 February entitled “Sustainability, Business Health and Competitiveness”, organised by the Confederation of Business Associations of the Balearic Islands (CAEB). CAEB opened the event through its secretary general (Sergio Bertrán) and the managing director of TIRME, Rafael Guinea. TIRME, the event sponsor, is a corporation that has been leading solid waste management in Majorca since 1992. Also present was the Balearic Government’s Director General for Economic Promotion, Entrepreneurship and the Social and Circular Economy, Vanessa Rosselló.

As well as representing REAC, Fernández is the founder and director of Grúas Mallorca, a member company of the Network. In addition to providing a range of roadside assistance services, this small company based in Palma de Mallorca has stood out for its commitment to occupational risk prevention. In fact, Grúas Mallorca was the first company in the trade to obtain accreditation in this area (it has held the ISO 36001 Road Safety certificate since 2015).

For Fernández, occupational risk prevention is inseparable from business sustainability, which is why CAEB invited him to give a talk on Grúas Mallorca as a success story, since today it is a “healthy, sustainable and competitive” organisation.

The MIESES model: a systemic approach

The event took place at the Confederation’s headquarters (calle Aragó, 215), where Bertrán pointed out the advantages for companies of including among their strategies the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2030 Agenda, both adopted by the United Nations (UN). Goals incorporated into the “strategic planning” of businesses such as TIRME, in the words of its sustainability director, Amalia Cerdá. They include the eradication of poverty, decent work and economic growth, as well as responsible production and consumption.

One of the aims of the event was precisely to present the so-called MIESES Model, developed by Mieses Global (International Movement for Excellence, Business Health and Sustainability).

Founded in 2016 by a dozen organisations, this movement was created to respond to some of the consequences of an economy that is unsustainable in the long term: from the ravages of globalisation to inequality and job insecurity, the rise of financial capital over the value of labour… and environmental imbalance, a consequence of climate change.

Linking business excellence to the Sustainable Development Goals as a brand value is fundamental to the MIESES tool, which is altruistic in nature. Manel Bestratén, chairman of Mieses Global, explained to those attending the presentation that the so-called “four Ps model” is very relevant here: people, prevention, planet and prosperity (profit).

In this way, each organisation must carry out its own diagnosis (by means of a SWOT analysis), examining its weaknesses, threats, strengths and opportunities. Mar Romero, HR consultant and the organisation’s outreach manager, stressed that people were key to the new business culture.
