With the new year, it is important to look at ITV prices for the whole year. Powers in this area have been transferred to the Autonomous Communities, hence the difference in fees.
Booking an appointment for the ITV, the documents you must bring to the ITV… there are many concerns that come to mind as the date approaches for completing a procedure that is necessary for everyone's safety on the road. However, the ITV price varies depending on where we live and drive. Some people, taking advantage of living near a regional border, even do their sums and travel to take the inspection in a region with more affordable fees.
The price of the Vehicle Technical Inspection (ITV) is influenced by everything from the type of fuel we use (diesel is more expensive than petrol: you can end up paying 16 euros more in Madrid or the Balearic Islands) to the type of vehicle we use (cars, motorbikes, mopeds).
But not always. Although the power of diesel makes the inspection more expensive, this does not apply to every station in the country. Examples can be found in the Basque Country (46.69 euros), Asturias (37.90 euros), Extremadura (35.90 euros) and Navarre (33.30 euros), where you pay the same whether the vehicle runs on petrol or diesel. Engine size also has an effect: Andalusia would be the cheapest region for cars under 1,600 cubic centimetres, while the Basque Country would be the most expensive.
Huge differences, according to FACUA

Each Autonomous Community has different fees, depending on whether the service is run publicly or privately. The ITV in Madrid, being the only one that is liberalised rather than regulated by the authorities, is more expensive for diesel vehicles and motorbikes (56.50 and 38 euros, respectively). The latest report by FACUA-Consumidores en Acción, from December 2018, refers to fees that double depending on the region.
In 2018, the average price of the Vehicle Technical Inspection was 34.82 euros for petrol cars and 42.05 euros for diesel cars. Meanwhile, in 2019, which has only just begun, Extremadura has the lowest fees for diesel cars (35.90 euros).
For motorcyclists, engine size is what determines how much the ITV costs us (the price goes up for those over 125 cc). The average cost of the ITV for motorbikes is about 20 euros… although in Madrid it is almost 40 euros. That is a big difference.
