The cheapest provinces to take out car insurance (and the most expensive)

A comparison of car insurance based on the region where we live produces surprising results, if we consider how the average price rises in provinces such as Pontevedra.

We should start with the average spend on car insurance, which in 2016, according to kelisto.es, was 623.7 euros, and which Rastreator, for its part, put at 583 euros between January and August 2018. Over these last two years, three provinces have stood out as the most expensive when it comes to taking out these policies:

  1. Pontevedra (789.4 euros)
  2. Cantabria (705.9 euros)
  3. Cádiz (691.8 euros)

The figures correspond to the most recent report, the 2018 report by Rastreator, which refers to an increase of up to 65% in the cost of insurance depending on the province in which we drive.

By contrast, the provinces that have stood out this year as the cheapest in terms of the average cost of car insurance have been:

  1. Zaragoza (478 euros)
  2. Cáceres (484.61 euros)
  3. Segovia (489.86 euros)

It seems that insuring our vehicles is less "painful" in the Aragon region, since Huesca was also listed as one of the cheap provinces in both reports consulted. In fact, in 2016 this region offered the cheapest insurance in Spain, with an average price of 222 euros.

Roadside assistance

Among the questions that concern us as vehicle owners – how many kilometres the insurance tow truck covers, roadside assistance and recovery, whether the insurance covers a tow truck… – perhaps, before choosing one company or another, we should ask ourselves about things like the age and range of the vehicle, the use we make of it or where we park it. It is about matching the insurance to your car.

The insurer will also take into account our age and our claims history – or lack of one – as well as the characteristics of our vehicle. The accident rate in the province, as well as the size of its vehicle fleet or the number of thefts each year, will also determine the car insurance premium.

Other data included in the 2018 study are the figures for third-party insurance, with an average premium of 316.4 euros, and extended third-party insurance (363.5 euros in this case). Comprehensive insurance with an excess averaged 537.9 euros, while without an excess it reached 1,117.9 euros.
