Safety and confidence behind the wheel

Tips for driving at night:

Driving at night can be a challenge even for the most experienced drivers. Reduced visibility, tiredness and glare from other vehicles' lights can increase the risk of accidents. However, with the right precautions, it is possible to travel safely and confidently after the sun goes down. Follow these tips and make your night-time journeys safer!

1. Check your lights before setting off

Lighting is your best ally at night. Make sure your headlights, rear lights, indicators and brake lights are working properly. Adjust the height of your headlights to avoid dazzling other drivers and use full beam only when there are no oncoming vehicles.

2. Keep your windscreen clean

A dirty windscreen can distort lights and make it harder to see. Clean both the inside and outside of the glass and check that your wipers are in good condition. Unnecessary reflections can be a dangerous distraction.

3. Reduce your speed

Limited vision at night requires longer reaction times. Driving at a moderate speed will allow you to anticipate the unexpected and react more safely. Remember: better to arrive a little late than not at all.

4. Avoid dazzling and being dazzled

Look towards the right-hand edge of the road when oncoming vehicles have their full beam on. This will stop their headlights from dazzling you. Likewise, make sure you switch off your full beam when passing other vehicles or following another car.

5. Rest if you feel tired

Drowsiness is one of the greatest enemies of night-time driving. If you notice signs of tiredness such as frequent yawning, constant blinking or difficulty concentrating, stop somewhere safe and rest. A short nap or a coffee can make all the difference.

6. Increase your safety distance

Darkness can make it harder to judge distances. Keeping a suitable distance from the vehicle in front will give you more time to brake or react to any unexpected situation.

7. Use your mirrors frequently

Even though there is less traffic at night, it is important to stay aware of what is happening around you. Adjust your mirrors to avoid reflections and check your surroundings constantly to stay in control.

8. Avoid distractions

The silence and calm of the night can make distractions more noticeable. Avoid using your mobile phone or doing anything that could take your attention off the road.

9. Plan your route

Knowing the way in advance will help you reduce stress and avoid getting lost unnecessarily. Use reliable navigation systems and make sure they are up to date to avoid surprises on unfamiliar roads.

10. Trust your instincts and act prudently

If something does not seem safe to you, such as a poorly lit road or adverse weather conditions, look for alternatives or stop until you feel comfortable carrying on. Your safety must always be the priority.

Driving at night does not have to be a stressful experience if you take the necessary precautions. The key is to stay calm, be aware of your limitations and always stay alert. Remember, safety behind the wheel is everyone's responsibility!
