Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

The importance of stakes, helmets, gloves and goggles in occupational safety

In any working environment, especially those involving physical, chemical or mechanical risks, the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is essential to guarantee the safety and health of workers. Among the most important items are stakes, safety helmets or bump caps, gloves and safety goggles. In addition, specific regulations, such as the EN 471, EN 397 or EN 166 standards, ensure that this equipment meets quality and effectiveness standards.

Below, we look at how each of these items protects workers and helps prevent accidents:

1. Safety helmet: vital protection for the head

The safety helmet, designed in accordance with the EN 397 standard and classified as CAT II, is indispensable in sectors such as construction, mining and industry. Its main function is to protect the head from mechanical impacts, falling objects and other associated risks.

Key benefits of the safety helmet:

  • Impact absorption: It disperses the force of a blow, minimising injury in the event of an accident.
  • Additional protection: Some models offer thermal or electrical insulation.
  • Comfort and fit: Its ergonomic design ensures comfort during long working days.

2. Protective gloves: safety in your hands

Under the EN 388 standard, mechanical protection gloves (category CAT II) are essential to protect the hands from cuts, abrasions and knocks. Depending on the risk, materials range from leather to Kevlar or nitrile.

Essential features:

  • Cut and abrasion resistance: Protection against serious injuries.
  • Thermal and chemical protection: Specific to high temperatures or hazardous substances.
  • Non-slip grip: Increases precision and safety when handling tools.

3. Safety goggles: clear vision and eye protection

In environments with airborne particles or chemical splashes, safety goggles certified to the EN 166 standard and classified as CAT II are indispensable.

Risks mitigated by goggles:

  • Airborne particles: They protect against wood or metal chips and debris.
  • Chemical substances: They prevent damage from acids or solvents.
  • UV protection: Some models include UV filters for outdoor work.

4. High-visibility clothing

In areas where there is a risk of being struck by vehicles, high-visibility clothing certified to the EN 471 standard ensures that workers are visible at all times. Class 3 is the highest and is used on roads with speeds above 80 km/h.

5. Stakes: safe work starts with the right tools

Although they are not directly part of PPE, stakes are essential in excavation and gardening work. Their ergonomic design reduces the risk of injury during prolonged use.

The key to success: awareness and compliance

Using PPE not only protects workers but also boosts their confidence and performance. However, its effectiveness depends on proper training and compliance with the applicable regulations.

Investing in safety means investing in workers' wellbeing. Properly equipping work teams is a commitment that every organisation must take on.
